While growing up I listened to a wide variety of music, especially when I was hanging out with friends who had older brothers and sisters. I had to listen to a lot!
Stuff from the Beatles to Jimmy Hendrix.
It wasn't until the 90's that I started to appreciate what I had listened to all of those years. I still listen to all of those old songs , and I like most of the current music. Music ranging from Oasis, U2 , Alanis Morissette , to The Tea Party and Big Sugar. Big Sugar is a small Canadian secret. They have recorded some great CD's, yet they are constantly touring around Ontario. It's great when bands play the small venues, you will always remember them. I remember years ago going to the Knob Hill Hotel in Scarborough and seeing many not-so-famous (at the time) bands playing. People such as Lawrence Gowan, Burton Cummings, Ronnie Hawkins, Dominic Trojano , Dan Hill. Now they're big tickets, but their roots started somewhere. I had the opportunity in 1996 to meet Lawrence Gowan and April Wine when I was managing a band. It was great to talk to them about the old days, they remember the tough days and they complimented me for seeing them way back. I met a couple of rock music icons when doing some work for a film studio in Toronto. I had no idea at the time who they were, they somehow appeared different in person. Only after these people had left the studio was I told who they were. David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.
I met many actors at that studio, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas (Ian Thomas' brother), and others from the old SCTV crew. I still have my old Bob and Doug MacKenzie t-shirt they gave me ! The 40 oz. of Canadian Club they gave is long gone. I wonder why some untalented, (so called ) musicians (e.g. BSB) get a break. It really boggles my mind when I hear cheesy music being pushed on the radio or television. I must say that most of those bands have a lifespan of 1-2 years. I guess then, those listeners have moved on to another cheesy band or maybe they just woke up and smelled the coffee. Maybe they just turned 18 too ! I'm sure the record labels pull the plug on them when they're no longer in style (e.g. The New Kids on the Block). I'm sure music videos have sold more bad cheese to kids than grocery stores. I wonder how I would go about getting a job with a record label after those comments ? |
